Sometimes life changes the plan without asking permission.

For Helena Richardson, founder of HRichnetworks and WNC Lagniappe, that change came with Hurricane Katrina. The Louisiana native had built a life, a career in technology, relationships and a community she knew as home. Then suddenly, that life looked completely different.

Eventually, Helena and her family found themselves rebuilding in Virginia.

But looking back, Helena doesn't see that chapter as starting from zero.

“Starting over doesn't mean starting from nothing.”

She still had her experience. Her relationships. Her skills. Her faith. The lessons she had learned. And everything she had survived.

She was starting again—but she wasn't starting empty.

Reinvention With Experience

Long before becoming an entrepreneur, Helena built a career in technology across multiple industries, including healthcare, banking, insurance, government and even NASA. Technology made sense to her. What she eventually realized was that it didn't make sense to everyone else.

She would meet smart, accomplished business owners who knew their businesses inside and out—until the conversation turned to websites, SEO, automation or, more recently, AI.

That's where Helena found her lane.

Through HRichnetworks, she became the bridge between business owners and technology, helping entrepreneurs understand and use the tools available to them without making technology feel intimidating or unnecessarily complicated.

But technology is only one way Helena connects people with what they need.

Building More Than a Network

After COVID, Helena invited a small group of women to get together. Seven women gathering for connection eventually grew into WNC Lagniappe, a thriving community of women entrepreneurs.

“Lagniappe” is a New Orleans word meaning a little something extra—and Helena brought that piece of home with her to Virginia.

What she created wasn't simply another place to exchange business cards or chase the next sale. She created a space where women could build real relationships, encourage one another, be vulnerable and support each other's growth.

That approach reflects something Helena believes deeply: business cannot only be about the dollar.

Yes, businesses need revenue. But somewhere in the pursuit of the next client and the next opportunity, we can't lose sight of service or the power of building together. Helena has built both of her businesses around connection. As she describes it, she connects people with people and businesses with technology.

Don't Move So Fast You Miss Your Life

There's another lesson Helena has learned through reinvention: building a meaningful life requires actually being present for it.

She's a woman who likes to move. There is always another person to help, another idea to explore or another way to improve something. But these days, she's also paying attention to the birds singing, taking her walks, enjoying her grandchildren and noticing the moments that are easy to miss when we're constantly rushing toward what's next.

For women accustomed to carrying responsibility, building businesses, caring for others and keeping everything moving, sometimes being still is part of the work, too.

Life has already taught Helena that plans can change. So she's determined not to become so busy building the next thing that she misses the life she's building it for.

Making the Table Bigger

At the end of every BLK GRL MOB POD conversation, I ask my guest one question:

What does being a MOB Boss mean to you?

Helena didn't hesitate:

“A MOB Boss always makes room at the table while she's building a bigger table.”

That may be one of my favorite answers yet.

Because Helena's journey isn't only about what she rebuilt after Katrina or the businesses she created. It's about what she's doing with everything she brought forward. She's using it to make room. More room for entrepreneurs who need technology to feel simpler. More room for women who need genuine community. More room for relationships, collaboration and opportunity.

Helena Richardson didn't start from nothing.

She started from experience—and then she built a bigger table.
